Where to park in Ghent: P+R, garages and low-emission rules

Plan parking in Ghent: compare garages and park-and-ride with LEZ rules and city access before driving.

Free P+R is often the easiest choice

Ghent's historic centre is not intended for through-traffic. The city has a low-emission zone (LEZ) as well as a circulation plan with car-free streets. For a day trip, a free park-and-ride outside the LEZ plus tram or bus is frequently simpler than navigating central garages.

Free parking outside the centre

Visit Gent lists free P+R facilities including Flanders Expo / The Loop, Gentbrugge Arsenaal, Gentbrugge E17, Watersportbaan and Bourgoyen. These are not all equally convenient for every visitor: compare how you approach Ghent and the De Lijn connection to your destination. Parking may be free while the onward trip is not.

See the official P+R list and map.

Paid parking and city access

Ghent also has paid garages. The official tourism site distinguishes central facilities inside the LEZ from alternatives such as Gent Zuid, Dok Noord, Gent-Dampoort and Ledeberg. Their entrance routes may change due to works, so do not navigate directly to a central monument.

Two separate restrictions

The LEZ decides whether a vehicle meets emissions requirements. Visit Gent says drivers of eligible vehicles with number plates from outside Belgium or the Netherlands must register. The car-free circulation plan separately limits entry to pedestrian areas. If your hotel provides parking in a car-free zone, ask the hotel to arrange the appropriate permission before you arrive.

Avoid an expensive surprise

Check your vehicle's emissions class and plate registration, read the current roadworks notices and confirm the garage entrance address and height. The Ghent city circulation plan explains why a seemingly short drive through the centre may be impossible.
