Train convenience or the old town on your doorstep?
Ghent presents a clear accommodation choice: stay near Gent-Sint-Pieters to make arrival, departure and rail day trips painless, or stay in the historic centre for evenings by the Graslei and Patershol. Both are valid — but they feel quite different.
Sint-Pieters is the city's main station, outside the medieval core. A central hotel is better for spontaneous evening walks, while a station-area hotel avoids hauling luggage on the tram. Match the location to your actual plans, not a generic distance-to-centre figure.
Three station-area choices worth comparing
Hotel Chamade — Koningin Elisabethlaan 3, 9000 Gent. A straightforward base a very short walk from Gent-Sint-Pieters. Useful for early trains, short stays and travellers who spend most of their day away from the hotel.
Hotel Carlton — Koningin Astridlaan 138, 9000 Gent. An independently run hotel near the station, suitable for people who value a smaller, more personal property while keeping rail access easy.
Astoria Hotel Gent — Achilles Musschestraat 39, 9000 Gent. A quieter residential setting near Sint-Pieters. It may appeal to travellers who prefer a hotel away from the station's busiest approaches, but who still want a manageable transfer.
Property | Main advantage | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
Chamade | Very close to station | Short visit, early departure |
Carlton | Small-scale stay near rail | Couples, repeat visitors |
Astoria | Quieter, residential surroundings | Longer stay and relaxed evenings |
Always check the specific room, breakfast, accessibility and late-check-in arrangements. 'Near the station' does not mean identical walking routes for each hotel.
For a special city-centre stay
1898 The Post — Graslei 16, 9000 Gent. Located in the historic former post-office building by the central riverside, this is a distinctive choice for a city break focused on atmosphere and architecture. You are paying for setting and experience, not quick access to Sint-Pieters.
Hotel Harmony — Kraanlei 37, 9000 Gent. A boutique hotel in the historic centre near the castle and Patershol area. It is a good fit for travellers who want to step out into medieval Ghent early in the morning or return from dinner on foot.
A central location can make a one-night stay feel longer because you do not need another tram journey after dinner. On the other hand, cobbled streets, restricted vehicle access and narrow historic lanes deserve consideration with luggage or mobility needs.
Important if you're arriving by car
Ghent has a low-emission zone (LEZ) and a circulation plan with car-free streets. A city-centre hotel address does not guarantee unrestricted car access. Contact your chosen accommodation for parking instructions and any necessary permit or plate registration; compare those arrangements with a P+R option.
Station versus centre: our verdict
Choose Sint-Pieters if you have very little time in Ghent, need early trains or intend to explore several Belgian cities from one base. Choose the historic centre if your focus is Ghent itself and you value evening walks by the waterways. For a two-night visit, either works; how much you plan to travel outside Ghent determines the better choice.
No fixed nightly prices are quoted because rates depend on dates, room type and cancellation conditions. The presence of a hotel on this list does not establish a monetisable affiliate relationship; links must be verified per property before any commercial placement.
