The two stations: choose carefully

Gent-Sint-Pieters is Ghent's main railway station, with trains to many Belgian destinations and connections from Brussels Airport. It is outside the medieval centre; connect by tram or bus, cycle, or allow a longer walk. Gent-Dampoort, to the north, is closer on foot to parts of the historic centre: Visit Gent describes it as about a 15-minute walk away.

Arriving from Brussels

Search the SNCB/NMBS train planner for your departure station and Gent-Sint-Pieters or Gent-Dampoort. If you arrive by international train at Brussels-Midi, include the Belgian train connection when planning your journey.

From the airports

Visit Gent confirms a direct railway connection from Brussels Airport-Zaventem to Gent-Sint-Pieters. Charleroi Airport is farther away: compare an onward airport bus/coach and train combination, allowing for changes and waiting. Neither airport journey should be described only by the time of its fastest single leg.

Getting to the historic centre

From Sint-Pieters, tram and bus connections operated by De Lijn take you towards the centre. Visit Gent currently lists tram routes 1 and 3, but diversions may occur. Gent-Dampoort is also served by city buses; walking to the old town is often practical when travelling light.

Carrying luggage?

Visit Gent confirms lockers at both main stations. Ask your hotel whether it can store luggage before paying for a locker. If driving instead, remember that Ghent has an LEZ and a separate car-free circulation system; not every street can be approached by car.
