The easiest solution: use one of Ghent's two main stations

Both Gent-Sint-Pieters and Gent-Dampoort are included in the official SNCB/NMBS list of stations with luggage lockers. Choosing between them is mostly a question of where your train stops and where you will return at the end of the day.

Gent-Sint-Pieters is the city's main railway station. You will normally take a tram or bus into the medieval centre, so dropping your bags before the transfer can save carrying them on public transport.

Gent-Dampoort is closer to the north of the historic centre, and Visit Gent describes it as a short walk of roughly a quarter of an hour. It can be convenient for a day trip that starts near the castle or Patershol, provided your train and final departure use this station.

How much does an official locker cost?

SNCB publishes the following daily starting prices and compartment dimensions. The minimum rental period is one day, even if you only leave a bag for a few hours.

Locker

Dimensions (cm)

Price per day

S

14 × 23 × 60

€5.00

M

19 × 30 × 60

€7.00

L

44 × 34 × 60

€9.50

XL

58 × 50 × 80

€11.50

XXL

89 × 50 × 80

€14.50

Fit depends on your bag's actual dimensions, not the label 'cabin suitcase' or 'large case'. The XXL may take more than one bag if they physically fit and you can close it safely.

Booking and collection: a few rules worth knowing

SNCB lockers can be rented at the station or booked online. Opening your locker terminates the rental: take a jacket, medication, museum tickets and anything else you need before leaving. If you return late, an extra amount may be payable before opening. Don't leave your collection until after your last planned train without checking the access arrangements.

Availability isn't guaranteed at every moment. A booking is sensible for a busy weekend, a large group or an unusual suitcase size.

What about storage in the centre?

Private bag-storage companies may offer a point nearer to the historic centre. However, a brand advertising service in 'Ghent' is not proof of a specific open storage location on your date. Check the address, operating hours, whether booking covers the exact bag type, the extra fees and the walking route back to your train.

If you are already taking a tram from Gent-Sint-Pieters, the official locker can be more convenient than a private counter in another neighbourhood. If travelling from Dampoort, a partner close to your walking route might be worth comparing — but only after checking its actual listing.

A practical day-trip plan

Arrive, store your bags at the station you will leave from, head for Korenmarkt or Patershol and enjoy the historic streets without luggage. Keep some time in your return schedule to reach the station, retrieve the bag and find your platform. If you're sleeping in Ghent, ask your hotel first: some properties store guests' luggage before check-in or after checkout.
